Longest Footbridge in the Southern Hemisphere
This footbridge, built in 1947, is 395 m long. A sign reads: “Bridge construction was completed in 1947 using locally sourced timber and labour. Its construction enabled the children living in Whananaki South to attend school in Whananaki North. Previously the school teacher rowed a boat across the estuary twice a day to ferry the children across. The original kanuka bridge piles were replaced in the 1960's with treated pine piles.”
