The morning started off with some good news: I found my headlamp. Turns out it was lying on my pack outside my tent. It must have fallen out of the pocket I keep it in when I put the pack there, and I just couldn’t see it because it was too dark.

Leaving Warner Springs

After one of the most restful nights I’ve had on the trail (owing in no small part to tenting under a tree on grass with nice weather), I wound up getting a later start than anticipated, had a very tiring hike, didn’t meet my distance goal for the day, and had all sorts of annoying things go wrong.

Tree-Lined Trail to Warner Springs

Today was an unexpectedly lazy day for me, starting with the short half-mile walk to the Warner Springs Community Center, which seems a quite popular destination for hikers. Most of the hikers I’ve met in the last week have wound up here today.

With my tent properly set up, and a distinct lack of wind, I slept reasonably well last night. I was so tired from the long day, though, that I slept in a bit and didn’t leave camp until almost 8:45 am. And that late start was further delayed by an unexpected surprise: a water cache just a few tenths of a mile from where we camped, and earlier than the expected one under the CA-78 bridge at Scissors Crossing.
