Returning to Maryland, and now heading south, rather than north, the first of three days on the Appalachian Trail in Maryland this hike got me some nice views I wasn’t able to see the last time I was here.

A warm, humid day over some easy trail brought me to Quarry Gap Shelter, one of my favorites on the Appalachian Trail.

With only 15.4 miles from the shelter to the Ironmasters Mansion at Pine Grove Furnace State Park, I didn’t need to get started especially early. But with a shower and laundry waiting for me there, that was the enticement I needed to get moving at least somewhat early; why wait when there’s comfort waiting?
