South Branch Loop Trail

Today, I took an excursion to the Meadowood Recreation Area in Lorton, VA. Managed by the Bureau of Land Management, Meadowood has about 14 miles of hiking trails, in addition to mountain biking and equestrian trails and two fishing ponds. The park’s trails also are host to two national trails: the Potomac Heritage National Scenic Trail, and the Washington-Rochambeau Revolutionary Route National Historic Trail.

I’m giving my talk, “Hiking and Hacking: Two Sides of the Same Coin”, at the DC PHP metup next Wednesday at 7 pm at Canvas Co-Work. In it, I discuss the similarities between software development and long-distance hiking.

Lush, Green Forest

Location: Patapsco Valley State Park: Pickall, Daniels, and Woodstock areas (11.3 miles)

A warm, spring day made for perfect weather for a return to Patapsco Valley State Park. Today’s hike, following trails that connect the Pickall, Daniels, and Woodstock areas of the park was almost a maze of unnamed (and incompletely mapped) trails, but still made for a fun excursion.

Fairfax County’s Cross County Trail

Location: Cross County Trail: Colvin Run Mill to Potomac River (8.4 miles)
Hike: Day Hikes

Fairfax County’s Cross County Trail is a 40-mile long trail that traverses the county, from the Potomac River in the north, to the Occoquan River in the south. Today’s hike with MAHG followed the northern section the trail, from Colvin Run Mill (just off of VA 7, Leesburg Pike) to the trail’s northern end at the Potomac River. This section of the CCT is concurrent with the Difficult Run Trail.
