Waterfall on Cedar Run

Today, I ventured out again with MAHG for another scenic hike in Shenandoah National Park. Starting from the Whiteoak Canyon Parking lot, the trail took us up the mountain along the waterfalls of Cedar Run, eventually leading to Hawksbill Summit for some great views, before returning along a horse trail and through Whiteoak canyon, featuring yet more waterfalls.

Washington Monument at Night

One of the great things about living near Washington, DC is the proximity the large number of museums and monuments in the nation’s capital. It’s something that’s easy to take for granted. DC locals often bemoan how crowded The Mall can be when it’s “overrun” with tourists, while forgetting to actually visit the monuments themselves. So, today’s hike is a bit different: a tour of several DC monuments, lit by the light of the moon.

One year ago today, I made a decision that would forever change my life: I decided to thru-hike the Appalachian Trail. 42 days later, I stood atop Springer Mountain in Georgia, the AT’s southern terminus. 176 days, 2200 miles, and three pairs of boots later, I reached Katahdin, Baxter Peak, Northern Terminus of the Appalachian Trail.

Tiny Waterfall

Location: Loch Raven Reservoir: Merryman Point Area (10.6 miles)
Hike: Day Hikes

Today’s hike with MAHG was on hiking trails in the Merryman Point area of Loch Raven Reservoir. This reservoir, created by a dam on the Gunpowder River, provides water to the city of Baltimore, making this, unintentionally, my second hike in a row with MAHG that visited a Baltimore City reservoir located in Baltimore County. This hike was largely out-and-back, with some modifications at the ends to make it a dumbbell (in spirit, if not in shape).

After hiking in the McKeldin Area of Patapsco Valley State Park yesterday, I decided to return to that section of the park today in the hope of getting some better photographs of the not-very-shy deer I saw yesterday.
