Given the limited water availability on this section, Bob Dog, J Dub, The Bird, Alias, and I all decided that the only feasible place to hike to today was the Robin Bird Spring a little under 19 miles from yesterday’s campsite, Golden Oaks Spring. I got started around 7:30 to a warm sunny day with a light breeze. And for much of the day, the trail went through forested (or, at least, not obviously desert-like) land.

Today marks a major milestone: the last major stretch through the desert, between Tehachapi Pass (Highway 58) and Kennedy Meadows. It is also my entrance to the Sierra Nevada, which begins its southern extent at Tehachapi Pass. Although the Sierra Nevada may still be desert now, soon, the scenery will be much improved. This is also the dryest section of the trail, and up through Walker Pass, 85 miles from Tehachapi, water is very limited.

Today was a fairly busy day, between hiking, resupply, and two extra visits to the trailhead to pick up hikers. (Including yesterday and today, I may have set some sort of record for visits to the trailhead.)

In spite of a near-marathon day planned to get to Highway 58 and go into Tehachapi, I didn’t actually get started early. I headed out from camp a little after 7, and began a steep one mile climb to Tylerhorse Canyon. This gave me a great view of yesterday’s wind farm, but little did I know of the magnitude of the wind farm waiting not that far ahead.
