Our next day of hiking will cover the Tongariro Alpine Crossing, supposedly one of the best trails on the North Island. But with bad weather on the mountain, and extra time before we have to be at Whakahoro for our canoe trip down the Whanganui River, we’re sitting today out.

A wet, rainy day with more water crossings than can be counted brought us to the Tongariro Holiday Park, on the outskirts of Tongariro National Park and the famed Tongariro Alpine Crossing.

A longer day than planned took us from Taumarunui to Ōwhango, and then on to the 42 Traverse, an ATV track through forest.
