Day 11: Zero in Miena
Tuesday, January 6, 2026 4:28 pm
Location: Miena / Great Lake Hotel (192.3 km)

We took a very lazy day in Miena to rest.

  • We charged and turned on the iPhone we found on the side of the road two days ago. Unfortunately, there was no identifying personal information on the phone’s lock screen, apart from a black-and-white photo of a couple, and it didn’t seem to have been put into “lost phone” mode, so there didn’t appear to be anything further we could do to reunite the phone with its owner. We figured we’d give it to the hotel reception and let them turn it in to the police or something.
  • While we were getting lunch at the roadhouse across the parking lot from the hotel, a police officer stopped for their lunch break. So, we took the opportunity to give them the phone directly.
  • We called to obtain permission to camp at the Jones River camp three days from now. We also tried calling to obtain permission to cross through the property adjacent to the camp the next morning (necessary because hunting takes place there), but got an error message. We’ll try again later.
  • We had a nice dinner at the hotel’s restaurant. I got wallaby meatballs. It was an interesting taste, somewhere between beef and pork. I’m not sure I would order it again, but I wouldn’t not have it again either.
  • While waiting for our dessert, we chatted with an older guy who had a somewhat similar life opportunity and philosophy to me: a (long) retired-early software engineer, he took the opportunity to travel while he still had good health, rather than waiting until he was too old to enjoy it.
  • Tomorrow, we have a somewhat longish 32-km day to Bronte Park, sending us southwest on the Central Plateau to another small Tasmanian town (though, large enough to have public restrooms and a convenience store and public restrooms we can camp behind.
