Day 2: Chores in Latrobe
Sunday, December 28, 2025 9:33 pm
Location: Latrobe / Latrobe Mersey River Caravan Park (8.0 km)

We mostly finished our chores in order to set out on the Tasmanian Trail.

  • With no particular urgency for the day, we slept in until 9 am.
  • Unlike yesterday, it was dreary out, with a light rain for several hours this morning.
  • We returned to Banjo’s for breakfast. We got the same thing we did yesterday, and it was just as good.
  • We went to the IGA X-Press and picked up some snacks and sandwich material for lunch and dinner, then returned to Banjo’s to get a loaf of bread.
  • We also spent a good hour adjusting our plan. Rather than going all the way to Sheffield tomorrow, we’ll split the section in two and stop in Railton tomorrow. This’ll break up a 30 km day, and give us a shorter day into Sheffield, where we’ll have to actually go into town do a large resupply for the next stretch of trail. (The campsite for the section is on the outskirts of town as we arrive, and continuing from there to the next section doesn’t go through the part of Sheffield where the shops are, so the resupply run adds a few extra kilometers to the day.)
  • We also booked lodging in Miena for next week, including a zero.
  • We took an Uber to the edge of Latrobe (with the same driver yet again — is he the only Uber driver in town?!) to drop our extra stuff off in a secure facility.
  • We walked back to town, stopping at a larger grocery store to get food for two days to Sheffield, and three days for a box we’ll send ahead to Miena. (It’s a Sunday, and the post office is closed, so we’ll send it out tomorrow morning on our way out of town.) Our cashier told us that they’ve been having a very long winter, for the last six months. Yesterday was the first nice day they’ve had in a while, and it snowed on the central plateau on Christmas. Hopefully, we’re bringing the “good” weather with us from South Australia!
  • Back at the caravan park, we had a simple dinner of sandwiches and berries, which was quite good.
  • We mostly repacked the food we bought to go into our boxes to Miena.

Tomorrow, we’ll continue south, beginning the Tasmanian Trail in earnest.
